A British Antarctic Survey study found chinstrap penguins at Zavodovski Island’s largest colony declined by two-thirds between 2011 and December 2023, a loss of about 500,000 breeding birds. Researchers say the population is falling about 7% annually as warming pushes krill southward, reducing food.
