More than 50,000 drivers have joined the newly certified California Gig Workers Union amid stagnant pay, autonomous-taxi competition and rising vehicle costs. Uber and Lyft have not opposed it, partly because drivers remain independent contractors rather than employees, but the union has no formal leadership or list of demands.
