A 40-year-old founder, times 400
Experience Counts
These founders have been around the block and built a lot of things, so they know what to build. Peter Steinberger is a perfect example. There will be as many Patrick Collisons as ever, and this older founder is a mega trend on top of that.
Suddenly there are 400 of that person. Together they can outperform an entire department at any of the Mag 7.
Conflict and Decentralization
Experience in the enterprise teaches dynamics worth mirroring. Productive, constructive conflict at its best is the search for truth, and these systems can explore conflicting approaches with the human emotion taken out. Decentralization in an organization or an economy works because every idea gets tried.
How old are founders of fast-growing startups?
A 2020 study by economists Pierre Azoulay, Benjamin Jones, J. Daniel Kim, and Javier Miranda used U.S. Census Bureau data on new companies. They found that the average founder of the fastest-growing 0.1 percent of new companies was about 45 at founding. Founders in their early twenties were a small share of that group.
Why can healthy disagreement improve decisions?
In a 1995 study, management researcher Karen Jehn separated task conflict, disagreement about the work, from relationship conflict, which is personal friction. Disagreement over ideas can force a team to test assumptions that would otherwise go unexamined. Her findings were that disagreement about nonroutine work could help performance, while personal friction hurt it.
Why does decentralization help an economy?
In his 1945 essay The Use of Knowledge in Society, economist Friedrich Hayek argued that useful knowledge is scattered among millions of people, and no central planner can collect it. Prices carry that knowledge between strangers who never meet. Each person acts on local information, so many approaches are tried at once. Hayek received the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1974.
