A character knows whatever's funny
Homer at Vassar
Lisa slumps at the table, convinced she'll never get into an Ivy League school and will have to go to Vassar. Homer slams the table and declares there will be no Vassar bashing in this house. He would never know what Vassar is, and if he did, he wouldn't care. Suddenly it's where he draws the line.
Barney and Linda Ronstadt
The same thing happens in the Mr. Plow episode, written by Jon Vitti. Barney and Homer are competing in the plow business, and Homer thinks he's ahead until a commercial comes on at Moe's: Barney, promoting his plow business with Linda Ronstadt. Homer asks how he got her, and Barney answers that they've been looking for a project together for a long time.
The answer explains nothing, and it sounds like something Sammy Davis Jr. would say about Frank Sinatra. For one moment, a character can speak with a clarity he doesn't normally have.
Why is Vassar the school Lisa dreads?
Vassar College, in Poughkeepsie, New York, was founded in 1861 as a women's college and became coeducational in 1969. It was one of the Seven Sisters, a group of Northeastern women's colleges that were counterparts to the all-male Ivy League schools. That history gives it a reputation as an excellent college that sits just outside the Ivy League. Poughkeepsie is in the Hudson Valley, roughly 75 miles north of New York City.
How did the Rat Pack become a thing?
Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop starred in the 1960 film Ocean's 11, shot in Las Vegas. At night they performed together on stage at the Sands Hotel, in shows nicknamed the Summit. The name Rat Pack had first been used for an earlier circle of friends around Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, and it was later applied to Sinatra's group.
