A date only one person remembers
A date only he remembers
The boy was Anderson Cooper. He didn't really understand what was happening with his father then. Decades later, he is the only one in his life who remembers that day on the calendar as significant, so the reach-outs people send on an anniversary no longer come, and he doesn't expect them.
He works every New Year's Eve, a night that has always carried a strange sadness for him.
Other hidden dates
Plenty of people have days like this on their calendars, with a secret history that the people around them know nothing about. Mac Sinise died on January 5th too, in 2024, and the first anniversary of his death brought a ton of messages from people who remembered what his family was going through that day.
Why do anniversaries of a death stir grief?
Psychoanalytic writers since the mid-twentieth century have used the term anniversary reaction for the surge of feeling around dates tied to a loss. Calendars and seasons act as memory cues, so a date can bring back a past event before a person thinks about it. The same cues work on things like weather, music, and holidays. New Year's Eve, with its countdown and its crowds, is a date that carries cues for many people.
How do children understand a parent's death?
Hungarian psychologist Maria Nagy studied 378 children in Budapest in the 1940s and published her findings in 1948. She found that children around nine or ten began to see death as final and as something that happens to everyone. Younger children often saw it as temporary or as something that happens only to some people. Her work shaped decades of later research on how children grasp death.
Why does grief go unrecognized as years pass?
Sociologist Kenneth Doka coined the term disenfranchised grief in 1989 for loss that others do not openly acknowledge or support. Social customs give a limited window for mourning, with condolence cards and visits clustered in the first weeks. After that, a bereaved person's private anniversaries are known only to them. Doka's work led to a broader study of mourning that goes unseen.
