Josh Clark was asleep, dreaming he sat in a car, when he needed to get up to pee. As he got out of the car in the dream, he was getting out of bed in real life. His leg was already in the bedroom while the rest of him was still in the car.

He slowly transferred from the dream world into waking reality as he stood. The interior of the car and the edge of the bed were one and the same, a portal or threshold he went through, and he counts it among the neatest things that have ever happened to him.

Because he woke straight out of that dream, he remembers it clearly. People who wake right out of a dream are more likely to remember it.

How do bedroom signals enter dreams?

Sleeping brains keep monitoring the body and the room, and what they pick up can be woven into a dream. In a 1958 experiment, William Dement and Edward Wolpert sprayed water on sleepers' faces and played sounds during REM sleep, and the stimuli showed up in some of the dreams reported afterward. A full bladder is a commonly reported source of dreams about searching for a bathroom. Dream researchers call the process incorporation.

Why is waking from a dream groggy?

The brain does not switch on all at once. The brainstem and thalamus come online first, while the prefrontal cortex lags, producing a groggy state called sleep inertia. It typically lasts from a few minutes up to about half an hour. During that window, thinking and reaction time are worse than normal.
