Training on real life

The women who succeeded long term went through challenging stretches while they were coached: restaurants, vacations, holidays, busy work weeks, sick kids. Eating clean and avoiding the bread basket is still guesswork. What they learned was how to walk into a restaurant, read the menu, choose something that supports the goal, focus on protein and vegetables, enjoy the meal, and move on.

What they skipped

They skipped the habits that usually come with a night out: studying the menu for an hour beforehand, restricting food earlier in the day, and trying to work it off the next day. A shame spiral after a meal out, followed by a higher number on the scale the next morning, feeds a cycle of losing and gaining and losing again.

Planning for trips

Trips get the same treatment in advance. Planning a trip means looking at which meals and snacks work, whether grocery stores are nearby, which restaurants are on the list, whether dessert gets a slot, and whether to track at all. Coming home feeling confident beats coming home feeling like starting over.

Why does restricting earlier backfire at dinner?

In experiments from the 1970s, psychologists Peter Herman and Janet Polivy gave people a milkshake and then offered ice cream. Dieters who had just drunk the milkshake ate more ice cream afterward, while non-dieters ate less. Herman and Polivy called this counterregulation, and it is often described as the what-the-hell effect. Their restraint theory has been tested in many studies since.

Why does one big meal barely change body fat?

Body fat is stored energy, and gaining it takes a surplus across many days. A pound of body fat is commonly estimated to hold about 3,500 calories, a figure from Max Wishnofsky's 1958 paper. Researchers including Kevin Hall have shown that this simple rule overstates real-world change because metabolism adapts. A jump on the scale after a big meal comes mostly from food weight, water, and glycogen.
