Becoming a Songwriter
Chris Begg had never considered himself a musician. Then someone showed him that an AI platform can turn lyrics into a finished song. Songwriting became an extension of the poetry he'd always played with, a way of compressing words, feelings, and experiences into something he could carry around and listen to.
The Great Work
Before leaving for Egypt, he asked of each place why it was built and what it meant, and wrote a song to capture its essence. The album, called The Great Work, started with the Great Pyramid of Giza, where visitors can walk into the King's Chamber. He didn't publish it until he got back.
In the King's Chamber
The King's Chamber is a claustrophobic climb into the center of the pyramid. Sitting quietly in a corner, he felt he was supposed to listen to the song right there, and tears started coming down his face. He realized he should hear every song in situ, in the place it was written for. The title song had him thinking about why the pyramids were built and what enduring objective they were meant to serve.
How do AI platforms turn lyrics into songs?
Text-to-music systems are generative models trained on large collections of recorded audio paired with descriptions and lyrics. One common approach turns sound into a sequence of compressed audio tokens and predicts the next one, much as a language model predicts the next word. Another starts with noise and removes it step by step until a song emerges, the method used in many image generators.
What makes the King's Chamber so remarkable?
The King's Chamber sits near the heart of the Great Pyramid and is reached through the sloping Grand Gallery. Its walls, floor, and ceiling are red granite from Aswan, roughly 800 kilometers up the Nile. The room measures about ten meters long and five meters wide. Nine granite beams roof it, and some weigh around fifty tons.
Why did pharaohs build pyramids as tombs?
Egyptian kings of the Old Kingdom expected an afterlife and built monuments to carry them there. The earliest pyramid, the Step Pyramid of Djoser, was designed by the architect Imhotep around 2670 BC as a stack of stone tiers above a burial chamber. Smooth-sided pyramids followed, and the Great Pyramid at Giza was built for the king Khufu.
