An empty box instead of lunch
The daily lunch routine
The writers' room sat at the top of outdoor stairs behind a rusty, creaky screen door. Every day around 1:00, a production assistant clomped up the steps and banged through that door with boxes of unhealthy hamburgers from Islands. The writers reacted like Pavlov's dogs, salivating at the noise.
One day the food didn't come. George Meyer, Jeff Martin, and the rest sat around as 1:30 turned into 1:45, and the grumbling started.
The empty box
Conan excused himself to the bathroom, went downstairs, and found a big cardboard box. He waited a while, then clomped up the stairs, opened the screen door, and backed in so the room saw only a pair of jeans and a T-shirt, struggling with a box that looked heavy with food. Everyone cheered.
Then he turned around holding an empty box and announced that there was nothing. The writers were irate, and he was happy about it.
