Bacteria plus phage, a word that traces to ancient Greek for devour, gives the name. These viruses do one thing: they infect bacteria and kill them. Bacteriophages are very common, and they are bad news only if you happen to be the bacterium, in this case E. coli.

They play a real role in medicine and in the ecosystem. Bacteriophages have been shown to limit the spread of bacteria in agriculture and in human settings. Viruses are also the usual vehicle for delivering gene therapy, so designing and controlling them better helps there too.

Antibiotic resistance is rising worryingly, which is why more bacteriophage variants matter. A bacteriophage genome is quite simple, which makes it an approachable place for AI to start designing.

Why does each phage attack only certain bacteria?

A phage has to lock onto a particular molecule on the outside of a bacterial cell, much like a key fitting a lock. Different bacteria carry different surface molecules, so a given phage often infects only one species or even only certain strains of it. Bacteria in turn change those surface molecules to escape attack, and phages evolve new ways to bind. This long back-and-forth is one reason phages are so varied.

How much do phages shape the oceans?

Phages are a major force in marine ecosystems. Microbiologist Curtis Suttle reported in Nature Reviews Microbiology in 2007 that viruses kill roughly a fifth of the ocean's microbial biomass every day. When the bacteria burst, the carbon and nutrients inside spill back into the water and feed other microbes. That recycling is part of how the ocean's carbon cycle works.

Why are viruses used to deliver gene therapy?

Viruses evolved to get genetic material into cells, which is the hard part of gene therapy. Engineers remove the genes that make a virus harmful and load a therapeutic gene in their place. The modified virus then carries that gene into the target cells. Adeno-associated virus is among the most widely used of these delivery vehicles.
