Pick the person

Interests at the start of college are kind of arbitrary, so whether the instructor is a good educator and someone you resonate with counts for more. The same goes for books: if you liked one, read what else that author wrote instead of another book on the same subject.

One author versus crowds

The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy and the Princeton Companion to Mathematics are deliberately written by one individual who crafts a motivation around the topic. Wikipedia settles into a local minimum where every sentence has to be correct. A good exposition can be a little wrong on the way and correct itself later, and crowdsourced editing removes exactly that.

LLMs and references

LLM explanations resemble Wikipedia: amazing, and also flattened. The most useful part of a Wikipedia page is often the references at the bottom, so asking an LLM who to read can lead to a much better human-written overview than the chat itself.

How is the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy written?

Edward Zalta founded it in 1995 as one of the first scholarly encyclopedias online. Each entry is written by a single invited expert and reviewed by editors. Authors update their entries over time, so the article has one voice and a stable author.

How does Wikipedia decide what stays?

Its core policies are verifiability, a neutral point of view, and no original research. A claim stays when it can be backed by a published source, and many editors can change the same page. That process produces text that avoids unsupported statements, and it leaves little room for one writer's framing.

Who edited the Princeton Companion to Mathematics?

Timothy Gowers, a Fields Medal winner, edited it. The book appeared in 2008 and runs over a thousand pages. Its articles were written by well-known mathematicians, each in a personal style, covering topics from the foundations of the subject to current research.
