Dad hated Marge carrying the tire

Named after his family

Groening's father is Homer, his mother is Marge, and his sisters are Lisa and Maggie. Marge's towering hairdo traces to his mother's beehive when he was a kid, and from the angle he looked up at her, it seemed enormous. She always denied it, but he has photos. He figures he wrecked their lives a little by giving the characters their names.

The tire

His father loved the show except when Homer was mean to Marge. In one episode the family's car breaks down in the desert, and while the family sits in the shade of a big boulder, Marge has to carry a tire back to town. His father called him up, furious that Homer made her carry it.

Groening pointed out that Homer strangles his kid. His father didn't care about that.

Why did beehive hairdos get so tall?

The beehive was popularized by Chicago hairdresser Margaret Vinci Heldt, who created it in 1960 for Modern Beauty Shop magazine. Hair was teased, or backcombed, at the roots so it held volume, then sprayed to stay in place. Heldt named it for its resemblance to a beehive. The style was at its most popular in the 1960s.

Where did Bart's name come from?

Groening has said that he named the family after his own but swapped his own name for Bart, an anagram of brat. He also took the name Springfield from the town in the 1950s TV series Father Knows Best. Springfield is among the most common town names in the United States.
