The cost of one show

A stadium show for a couple can be a four-figure day even from the nosebleeds: a hotel, fifty dollars to park, a shirt, a babysitter. That adds up to thousands of dollars to see a show from a very bad seat. A smaller artist playing down the road for a fifteen-dollar ticket starts to look better.

Touring without sellouts

Touring used to build on sellouts. An artist came back to the city they crushed after an album and sold twenty percent more tickets. Now the same fans might remember seeing the artist last year and loving it, and pick a new act this time, because they can only choose one show this month or this year.

Blue Dot Fever

Blue Dot Fever is a wave of big artists playing arenas and stadiums without selling out, and sometimes killing tours entirely. Relevance is part of it, along with ticket prices, Ticketmaster and Live Nation, and dynamic pricing. Live events are expected to come back, but people have less money, and venues know they have to squeeze without squeezing too much.

Why do artists underprice their own tickets?

Economist Alan Krueger argued in his 2019 book Rockonomics that many top artists set ticket prices below what fans would pay. The gap between the face value and the market price is then captured by resellers. Artists and managers have often preferred lower prices to keep shows accessible to loyal fans. Dynamic pricing, which adjusts prices with demand in real time, is one method for capturing that gap instead.

Why do tours get cancelled when sales lag?

A large tour carries high fixed costs: stage production, trucks, crews, insurance, and venue rentals are paid regardless of how many seats are sold. Promoters often guarantee the artist a fee, which puts the financial risk on the promoter. When ticket sales fall short of covering those costs early on, cancelling can lose less money than playing half-empty buildings. Cancelled dates are usually announced in batches, with refunds issued to ticket holders.
