Father and teacher stop school gunman
Caleb Giammanco was on his lunch break when he heard gunfire from inside the school his two daughters attended. Police say the 36-year-old father retrieved a legally secured pistol from his vehicle and went inside. The gunman, a former student and himself a special needs student, had shot at locked doors to force his way in.
During the attack, a teacher threw her phone at him and tackled him, trying to take his shotgun. Giammanco shot the gunman dead before police arrived. The Bend police chief praised the courage of the teacher and the father, and President Trump has called the father a hero. His family said he was not seeking recognition, only privacy.
Three children and a teacher were killed: five-year-old Rome Summer, two unnamed boys aged eight and 11, and 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert, whose family said that teaching in the district she grew up in was her dream job. A seven-year-old girl is in serious but stable condition, and another teacher has non-life-threatening injuries. The gunman's motive and how he obtained the shotgun remain under investigation.
Why did police tactics change after Columbine?
Before the 1999 attack at Columbine High School in Colorado, many police departments trained officers to set up a perimeter and wait for specialized tactical teams. Reviews of the response afterward led departments across the United States to adopt active shooter training, which tells the first officers on scene to enter and confront the attacker. The change is often described as the biggest shift in American police response to school attacks.
Why did schools change classroom locks after Sandy Hook?
Reviews after the December 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut noted that many classroom doors could only be locked with a key from the hallway side. Afterward, states and school districts revised their codes to allow locks that can be secured from inside the room. Fire codes still require that a door be openable from the inside without a key, so the new locks had to meet both rules.
