Friendship looks outward
Looking outward
Romantic love between spouses is two people looking at each other. The love of friends is looking out at shared things, which leaves plenty of room for other people. Someone entrepreneurial and willing to take risks will tend to seek that same disposition in friends.
Time as a gift
With young children in the picture, the opportunity cost of time with friends has never been higher. A friend who spends limited free time with you has chosen to, which brings gratitude and a kind of pride.
Mentorship
Mentorship works as a kind of friendship, so it can't be forced. Without enough in common, building a mentorship makes no sense. Often what two people share is a wish to build something great, such as a company, and that can be enough.
How did C.S. Lewis describe friendship?
In The Four Loves, published in 1960, C.S. Lewis wrote that lovers are absorbed in each other, face to face, while friends stand side by side, absorbed in a common interest. He also argued that friendship is the least biological of the loves, since it does not arise from instinct or family ties.
How many close friends can people keep?
Anthropologist Robin Dunbar's research describes layers of relationships, with about five people in the innermost circle, widening to about 15, 50, and 150. Each layer takes less time and emotional investment than the one inside it. Dunbar's estimate of 150 for the outer layer came from comparing brain size with group size across primates.
How did Aristotle sort friendships?
In the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle described three kinds of friendship: those based on usefulness, on pleasure, and on shared goodness. He considered the third kind the most lasting because it rests on admiration for the other person's character rather than on what they provide. The first two dissolve when the benefit ends. Scholars call the third kind virtue friendship.
