It says bulgaricus, not Greekus

To a Bulgarian yogurt maker, there is no such thing as Greek yogurt. It's a made-up word, and nobody can prove otherwise because it's so obvious. A 27-year-old restaurant owner from Sofia puts it another way: all the people in the world think yogurt is Greek because Bulgaria has bad advertisement, and that's how you make an angry Bulgarian.

Being a Bulgarian yogurt maker means being asked, before anyone has even seen the yogurt, whether Bulgarians know anything about yogurt. It is the only thing they make, so the question lands like an insult.

Everywhere you look, the Greeks get the credit. Everybody knows Greek salad, and there's a Bulgarian salad just like it, even better. Tzatziki has a twin called snow white, also better. The reason is simple: he's Bulgarian.

For all of this he owns a T-shirt that reads: Let the Greeks have their philosophers. Leave the yogurt to us.
