The legend traces to the January 1991 issue of a print-only magazine on thoroughbred and classic cars, in a quote from Ferruccio himself. A wealthy Italian tractor manufacturer, he owned a Ferrari whose clutch problem was never cured, so he waited a very long time to see Enzo and told him that his cars were rubbish. A furious Enzo answered that Lamborghini might be able to drive a tractor but would never be able to handle a Ferrari properly. That, Ferruccio recalled, was the point where he decided to make a perfect car.

Another account holds that the tale was deliberate myth-building and never happened. In that version, one of his tractor mechanics was repairing a Ferrari and found that some of its parts were quite similar to parts used in the tractors. The mechanic suggested they could try making cars too, and be at least as good as this Enzo guy. Everyone involved is long dead, and the truth could be some of both.

Why does Lamborghini use a bull logo?

Ferruccio Lamborghini was born on April 28, 1916, under the zodiac sign Taurus. He was also a fan of Spanish bullfighting. He visited the Seville ranch of the breeder Eduardo Miura, and the Lamborghini Miura of 1966 took its name from the family.

How did a tractor maker become a carmaker?

Ferruccio Lamborghini founded his tractor company in 1948 and built the first machines partly from surplus military vehicles left over from World War II. He founded Automobili Lamborghini in 1963 in Sant'Agata Bolognese, near Bologna. The first production car, the 350 GT, followed in 1964.
