Million miles, worn-out C-17
The travel was one of the biggest surprises of the job. It takes a toll physically, and it takes a toll on family, colleagues, and everyone else around.
The senior-most jobs in government cannot be done alone. Trying to do it all yourself drives you crazy and turns you into a micromanager, so the approach was to surround himself with people who were smarter, whom he could trust and rely upon.
The unforgiving pressures of such jobs have no way around them, and there is no substitute for a strong and loving family at home.
Why do senior officials fly on military cargo planes?
The C-17 Globemaster III is a Boeing-built transport that entered service in the 1990s. It can land on short runways, including ones that civilian jets cannot use. It can carry vehicles, secure communications equipment, and security teams along with passengers. Those capabilities let an official reach places without commercial flights.
Why does crossing time zones wear people down?
The body keeps time with a circadian clock, which is regulated by a small region of the brain called the suprachiasmatic nucleus. Light is the main signal that sets the clock. When a traveler crosses several time zones, the clock and the local day fall out of step. The clock typically shifts only about an hour or so per day, which is why adjustment takes days.
