NYC bans AI in elementary schools

The ban is part of a larger new policy that also includes limits on digital devices in the city's schools.

New York City is the nation's largest school system.

Why do cities limit devices in schools?

A 2015 study by Louis-Philippe Beland and Richard Murphy of the London School of Economics examined English schools that banned mobile phones. Test scores rose after the bans, with the biggest gains among the lowest-achieving students. A 2023 UNESCO global education report also recommended that smartphones stay out of schools unless used for learning. The report cited concerns about distraction and online safety.

Why does a big district's policy spread?

The largest districts and states are the biggest customers for publishers and software makers, so their rules shape what companies build for everyone. Textbook adoption rules in Texas and California have long influenced what national publishers print. Other districts often copy policies that large systems adopt because they have no research staff of their own. New York City's public school system includes well over a thousand schools.
