Copies kept on set carried the actors' names, so any missing copy could be traced back to its negligent owner. Recruiting an actor meant delivering the script in person. Nolan turned up at the actor's house with a copy, sat in the living room drinking tea until the actor finished reading, and then took it away with him.

Crews know Nolan for punctuality, discipline, and secrecy. He refuses to use a second unit and shoots every frame himself. The days start at 7 a.m. and end at 7 p.m. with a single break for lunch. He is known in the film business for good luck with weather, but he often has terrible luck with it and shoots anyway, and he makes sure the cast and crew know it.

How do watermarks trace a leaked script?

Putting a recipient's name on each copy means a leaked page can be traced back to the person it was issued to. A related method, called a canary trap, gives each recipient a slightly different version of the text, so the wording of a leak reveals its source. The term was popularized by Tom Clancy's 1987 novel Patriot Games. Productions pair these methods with non-disclosure agreements, which are common across Hollywood.

How did the real Dunkirk evacuation unfold?

Operation Dynamo ran from May 26 to June 4, 1940, after German forces trapped Allied troops against the French coast. Around 338,000 soldiers were taken off the beaches and harbor at Dunkirk in those nine days. Destroyers and other naval ships did much of the work, and hundreds of civilian vessels, later called the little ships, crossed the Channel to ferry men from the shallow beaches. The evacuation took place while Germany was advancing through France.
