Paved paths and hiring
Netflix grew partly because local teams with a specific business problem could move fast, and they often built their own stack off the central path. With agents operating across multiple systems and a need for source-of-truth data, common infrastructure and preferred paved paths matter more. They solve problems once and add guardrails along the way.
That is why Netflix is hiring more people who can look across business domains and abstract them into the building blocks AI will need. Engineering profiles lean toward distributed systems and infrastructure over local business expertise, on top of the people who are deep in personalization, advertising, and content delivery.
Design systems
Design follows the same logic. The experience design team builds templates and design systems so that people who are not designers by training can still ship products that fit into the member experience. Different design languages or interaction types would mean shipping Frankensteins.
Risk and shared knowledge
Risk is part of it too. More people doing new kinds of work raises questions about access, identity, security, and the quality of code and design. Data science encodes which data is the source of truth, how to read it, and what to avoid doing with it. An organization with thousands of people cannot rely on tribal knowledge or on finding the one person who knows, a challenge that existed before AI and is probably more urgent with it.
What is a paved road in engineering?
Netflix engineers have used the term paved road for the set of centrally supported tools and libraries that teams are encouraged to build on. Teams can leave the road, but they then take on the maintenance cost of what they build. The central group handles security fixes, upgrades, and operations for everything on the road. The approach gives teams freedom without asking the company to support every possible stack.
Why does tribal knowledge fail as organizations grow?
Fred Brooks explained the arithmetic in his 1975 book The Mythical Man-Month. The number of possible communication channels in a group of n people is n times n minus one, divided by two. A team of 10 has 45 channels, and a team of 100 has 4,950. Brooks used this to explain why adding people to a late software project can make it later.
How do design systems keep products consistent?
A design system is a shared library of components, rules, and patterns that every team builds from. Brad Frost popularized an influential way to organize one in 2013, called Atomic Design, which builds interfaces from small parts up to full pages. Google released Material Design in 2014 as a design system for its own products and for outside developers. Companies that adopt one let people without design training assemble screens that match the rest of the product.
