Producers staged his father's drowning

The escape

In the 1998 film The Truman Show, Truman is the unwitting star of a reality show, living in a town that is a set inside a giant dome. After a string of failed escape attempts, he seems to settle back into his routine, until the producers discover he is missing from his house. A tunnel let him slip out unseen. They switch on the sun at midday with spotlights so every actor in town can join the search, but Truman has already taken a boat out onto the water. The producers had planted his fear of the sea on purpose, staging his father's drowning in front of him so he would stay away from it.

The storms

The producers find him on camera and send storms: waves, fake lightning, a battering that throws him into the water. He swims back to the boat, grabs on, and ties himself down. They come to the edge of killing him before they turn the storms off, and the boat keeps going until it hits the edge of the dome, which is painted to look like the sky.

The door

A set of stairs blended into the painted sky leads up to a door. The head producer, played by Ed Harris, speaks through the clouds over the PA like the voice of God and tells Truman he is the star of a television show. He urges Truman to stay: there is no more truth out there than in the world he built, the same lies and the same deceit, but in his world Truman has nothing to fear, and the producer knows him better than he knows himself. Truman answers that the producer never had a camera in his head. Then he gives his sign-off from the show, in case I don't see you, good afternoon, good evening, and good night, bows, and walks through the dark doorway, out of sight of the cameras.

Why did psychiatrists name a delusion after the film?

Joel Gold, a psychiatrist at Bellevue Hospital in New York, treated patients who were convinced their lives were being filmed and broadcast. With his brother Ian, a neuroscientist at McGill University, he named the pattern the Truman Show delusion. The brothers described it in their 2014 book Suspicious Minds. The label is informal and does not appear as a formal diagnosis in the DSM.

How did critics receive Jim Carrey's dramatic turn?

Carrey was then best known for comedies such as Ace Ventura and The Mask. His performance won the 1999 Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama, and Ed Harris won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor. Harris was also nominated for the Oscar, as were Peter Weir for Best Director and Andrew Niccol for Best Original Screenplay. Carrey himself received no Oscar nomination for the role.
