The reunion contract

Cast members are contractually obligated to attend the reunion after dunking on each other all season. It is entertainment, it is built for ratings, and they are paid to have heat. Even so, the setup matches traditional conflict rituals.

A ritual setup

The reunion takes place in a different space from the normal set. The cast dresses up in boas, tiaras, and ballgowns, and gets prepared beforehand, including a pre-conflict resolution. An elder figure, Andy Cohen, thinks through the questions they will be asked.

The clearing

Two of the executive producers confirm the design: the entire purpose is a clearing. Producers of group shows have to think about the life and dynamic of a group. Parts of these shows are deeply dysfunctional and slide into unhealthy heat, and the reunion still gives a cast that has been through an intense experience a place to get something off their chest.

How do traditional societies use ritual to settle conflict?

Anthropologist Victor Turner described a pattern he called the social drama, based on fieldwork among the Ndembu people of what is now Zambia in the 1950s. It runs through a breach of norms, a crisis, redressive action, and then either reintegration or a split. Rituals usually sit in the redressive stage, where elders and ceremony give a divided community a structured way to repair. Turner first laid this out in his 1957 book Schism and Continuity in an African Society.

Why do rituals happen in a separate space?

French folklorist Arnold van Gennep described this in his 1909 book The Rites of Passage. He argued that rituals move people through three phases: separation from ordinary life, a threshold state in between, and a return to the group. Entering a different place, often wearing different clothes, marks the first phase. Victor Turner later expanded the middle phase into the concept of liminality.

When did The Real Housewives begin?

The Real Housewives of Orange County premiered on the cable network Bravo in 2006. The format followed a group of women in one city and later spread to many others, in the United States and abroad. Each season of most editions ends with a reunion special filmed with the cast and a host. The reunion became a recurring fixture of the franchise.
