Adoption everywhere

Uber has a bottoms-up culture, and AI adoption is happening everywhere. Engineers use it to scope projects, build, debug, handle on-call work, and run migrations, and the legal and marketing teams use it too. Uber has used machine learning for much longer than most companies, because its product depends on probabilistic outcomes in the real world, such as traffic, a driver canceling, or food running late.

The push from the top

The push from the top is for teams to use AI to rebuild systems and processes from the bottoms up, thinking about each one from a first-principles standpoint.

Rebels race ahead

Adoption is showing up in unpredictable corners. Developers in India are driving 10x the code commits they used to, using autonomous agents all over the place, and who is racing ahead does not follow the usual pattern. The aim is to find the rebels inside the company and promote them.

Why do new tools take years to pay off?

Economist Paul David described the pattern in his 1990 paper The Dynamo and the Computer. Factories began replacing steam engines with electric motors in the 1880s, but productivity barely rose for decades. The big gains came when owners redesigned factories around small motors at each machine instead of one central power shaft. The paper was written to explain why computers had not yet shown up in productivity statistics.

How do new technologies spread through organizations?

Everett Rogers described the pattern in his 1962 book Diffusion of Innovations. He sorted adopters into innovators, early adopters, early majority, late majority, and laggards. Adoption tends to follow an S-shaped curve, slow at first, then fast, then flattening. Rogers drew on studies of how farmers adopted hybrid seed corn in Iowa.
