Michael's family

Michael Paine was a research engineer at Bell Helicopter in Fort Worth, and he held a security clearance. His mother, Ruth Forbes Paine Young, belonged to Puharich's inner circle and was a great-granddaughter of Ralph Waldo Emerson. His stepfather, Arthur Young, designed the Bell helicopter and signed the checks for Puharich's research.

Ruth's road trip

Michael's wife, Ruth, was separated from him but lived in the house in Irving, Texas, where he still paid the mortgage. In September 1963, Ruth packed her station wagon and drove east on a two-week trip to visit family. One stop was her sister Sylvia's house in Falls Church, Virginia, next door to Langley, where Sylvia worked for the CIA.

Moving in

Ruth then swung south to New Orleans, where the Oswalds were coming apart. Lee was out of work and Marina was pregnant with their second child. Ruth offered to take Marina in until the baby came, and Marina moved in permanently while Lee came out only on weekends.

How did Arthur Young get into helicopters?

Arthur Young built working model helicopters on his family's Pennsylvania farm in the 1930s, long before he joined a company. He took his design to Bell Aircraft in 1941, and Bell developed it into the Model 47. The Model 47 became the first helicopter certified for commercial use in the United States. It received that certificate from the Civil Aeronautics Administration in 1946.

Why is CIA headquarters called Langley?

The headquarters sits in the Langley neighborhood of McLean, Virginia, so the agency's name became shorthand for its address. Before the move, CIA offices were scattered across Washington in a mix of temporary buildings. Allen Dulles pushed for one consolidated campus. President Eisenhower laid the cornerstone in November 1959, and the building opened in 1961.
