The pitch

The pitch is like sponsoring a Formula 1 team: the sponsor knows it will be on the car and everywhere the team goes. The sponsor's logo goes on merch and on clips, and the team shows up for the sponsor at any in-person event.

The contract

Each sponsor signs one annual contract at a fixed rate, based on projections for the year. If the audience grows past the projection, the extra impressions and reach are free. The seller gets predictable revenue, so it can know what March, April, and May will bring, hire a team, and invest in equipment and a studio.

Where it came from

The structure came from thousands of influencer, podcast, and YouTube deals. When an advertiser and a creator saw the first few ads go well, booking an annual deal right away served both sides: the advertiser could allocate its budget effectively, and the creator got predictable revenue. It also fit a team that was live on air three hours a day and had no time for a lot of ad sales.

Why do Formula 1 teams depend on sponsors?

Running a Formula 1 team costs hundreds of millions of dollars a season, and prize money covers only part of it. Sponsorship fills much of the gap, with logos on the car, the drivers' suits, and team clothing. Formula 1 introduced a budget cap in 2021, set at 145 million dollars for that season and excluding items such as driver pay.

Why does predictable revenue help a seller hire?

A business that knows its income months ahead can commit to salaries and equipment without gambling on later sales. Software companies built whole valuation methods around this idea, tracking annual recurring revenue as a core metric. Contracts that repeat on a fixed schedule let lenders and investors forecast cash with more confidence.

How did car sponsorship begin in Formula 1?

Early Formula 1 cars raced in national colors, such as green for Britain and red for Italy. At the 1968 Spanish Grand Prix, Lotus ran its cars in the red, white, and gold of the Gold Leaf cigarette brand, the first commercial livery in the series. Other teams soon followed with sponsor colors of their own.
