Two halves of manifesting

Manifesting has two halves. You decide who you are and what you will accomplish, and then you work toward it every single day. With both halves in place, failure stops being possible.

Plenty of people keep only the first half and sit with a vision board and a thought. It is like climbing into a car in the garage, programming the GPS, and never touching the gas pedal. The car goes nowhere.

The McGregor dinner

After whether a fighter can fight, the second thing that matters in the UFC is this mentality: a fighter who sits across the table and lays out what he is going to do and how it will play out. Conor McGregor was that fighter at the dinner where he signed with the UFC. Dana White left and called Lorenzo Fertitta to report that he could not tell whether McGregor could fight, but if he could even throw a punch, he would be a massive superstar. White has had only a handful of meetings like that in 25 years.

What does research say about positive daydreams?

Psychologist Gabriele Oettingen studied people who daydream about reaching a goal. In a 2002 paper with Doris Mayer in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, those who held positive fantasies about the future put in less effort and achieved less, across groups including graduates looking for work and patients recovering from surgery. Oettingen later developed a method of picturing the wish and then the obstacles in its way. In her studies that pairing led to more action than positive thinking alone.

How do if-then plans turn goals into action?

Psychologist Peter Gollwitzer described implementation intentions in a 1999 paper in American Psychologist. These are plans written as if X happens, then I will do Y. The plan hands the decision to a cue in the environment instead of relying on motivation in the moment. A 2006 meta-analysis by Gollwitzer and Paschal Sheeran covering 94 studies found a medium-to-large effect on reaching goals.

How fast did McGregor rise after signing?

McGregor made his UFC debut on April 6, 2013, in Stockholm and won by knockout in the first round. In December 2015 he won the featherweight title by knocking out José Aldo in 13 seconds at UFC 194. In November 2016 he beat Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 to become the first fighter to hold titles in two UFC weight classes at the same time.
