The boy shot and killed a teacher and three children in the classroom on Thursday. The children were aged five, eight, and eleven, and the teacher was 25.
The local police chief, Mike Krantz, told a press conference that the actions of the teacher and the parent saved lives. He said a teacher in the classroom threw her cell phone at the suspect, then tackled him and fought to take the firearm from him. She was not injured, and he said she almost certainly helped prevent more bloodshed.
How often do bystanders stop active shooters?
An FBI study of 160 active shooter incidents in the United States between 2000 and 2013 found that 13 of them, about 8 percent, ended when unarmed people restrained the shooter. The study was produced with Texas State University's ALERRT center. It counted incidents where a shooter was actively attacking people in a populated area.
Why do special needs classrooms have more adults?
Federal law requires each student receiving special education to have an Individualized Education Program that lists the supports the child needs. Those supports often include paraeducators who work alongside the teacher, and the groups are often smaller than in other classrooms. The law behind this dates to 1975 and is now called the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. In the 2022-23 school year, about 7.5 million US students ages 3 to 21 received services under it, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.
