Ten weirdo names for a startup
Brunch friends
Toby Stock, a co-founder of the new venture, had been dean of admissions at Harvard Law School when Sarah Isgur was a student there. He was a conservative in Elena Kagan's administration, she was a conservative law student, and each was a bridge of sanity for the other. About once a month they got brunch and chatted about life in Cambridge.
A walk and a promise
Years later he was starting a media company, and he preferred walking meetings to coffee, so they walked around DuPont Circle. The startup had no name yet. Isgur had nothing going on and was good at coming up with creative, weird names, so she promised ten by the end of the day.
The founders' reaction
He forwarded the list to the other founders, Jonah and Steve. They found the names totally weird and bizarre, and they wanted to meet the person who comes up with such weirdo names. None of her names became the company's name. The company is The Dispatch, which she writes for today and which owns SCOTUSblog.
