The Roswell author who faked documents

How Moore was recruited

After The Roswell Incident came out, Richard Doty and others presenting themselves as Air Force Intelligence officers approached Moore. They used the unfulfilled promise of hard evidence of extraterrestrial retrievals to recruit him. Moore kept notes on other ufologists and intentionally spread misinformation inside the UFO community.

The forged memos

The earliest known reference to "MJ Twelve" comes from a 1981 document used to target researcher Paul Bennewitz. In 1982, when Moore shared the memo for a TV documentary, the Air Force pointed out many style and formatting errors. Moore admitted that he had typed and stamped the document as a facsimile.

On December 11, 1984, filmmaker Jaime Shandera received the first anonymous package of photographs of Majestic-12 documents, just after a phone call from Moore. Everyone who received the documents was connected to Moore. The date format in the memos was idiosyncratic and matched the one in Moore's personal notes, and a Truman signature was identical to one on a 1947 letter to Vannevar Bush.

The confession

At a 1989 Mutual UFO Network conference, Moore confessed. Doty later admitted giving fabricated information to UFO researchers while working at Kirtland Air Force Base in the 1980s. Roswell proponents turned on Moore, but not on the broader conspiracy theory.

How do examiners catch a forged government memo?

Document examiners compare typefaces, date formats, spacing, and header conventions against genuine papers from the same office and period. A forger can copy a signature, but habits such as how a date is written tend to carry over from the writer's own notes. Matching quirks across documents is one of the oldest ways to link them to a single author. Handwriting and typewriter analysis was in use in forensic labs well before the 1980s.

How did the Majestic-12 papers reach the public?

The documents surfaced publicly in 1987 through filmmaker Jaime Shandera, researcher William Moore, and physicist Stanton Friedman. Friedman became the best-known advocate for their authenticity. The papers purported to describe a secret committee created in 1947 to handle crashed-disc recoveries. Their release produced decades of argument among UFO researchers.

Why is Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque notable?

Kirtland sits on the edge of Albuquerque, New Mexico, next to Sandia National Laboratories. Sandia has designed and tested nuclear weapons components since the Cold War. The base also hosts Air Force research units focused on space and directed energy. Its mix of weapons research and classified work made it the setting for many Cold War rumors.
