The Solicitor General was Miss Idaho
Miss Idaho
She was Elizabeth Prelogar, who went on to serve as Solicitor General of the United States. Back then she was incredibly studious and shockingly poised, and as articulate as she is today, which classmates found terrifying. She probably got sick of the Miss Idaho line.
The quiet trial lawyer
Alex Spiro, who became one of the most successful trial lawyers in America, barely seemed to pay attention in class. He was super popular and went to parties, which didn't look like what a lawyer was supposed to be. In hindsight it is obvious he was always going to become exactly who he is.
The prom king
Another classmate went on to found and run Carvana. The class declared him prom king at its tacky prom, and there are pictures of him in tutus and Mardi Gras beads.
Why is the Solicitor General called the tenth justice?
The Solicitor General's office was created in 1870 to represent the federal government before the Supreme Court. The Solicitor General personally argues many of the government's most important cases there and decides which lower-court losses the government will appeal. Because the office appears so often and picks its petitions selectively, the justices have historically granted its requests for review at a much higher rate than ordinary petitions. That close relationship with the court is the origin of the nickname.
Why do pageant titleholders often go to graduate school?
Scholarships have been central to the Miss America system since 1945, when it began awarding them. State pageants that feed into the national competition award scholarship money too. Many titleholders have used that money to pay for further study.
