The Launch Package

The novelist they call is Chetan Bhagat. He launches thirty books in two hours, like a mass wedding. Nobody is in the audience except the authors and their families, and each author gets thirty seconds on stage while he unveils the book. Then they make a reel and post it, and they are a published author released by Chetan Bhagat.

Blank Pages

He gets paid for it. Some of those authors may have written their books themselves, and some of the books come out of AI. At one launch he opened the book on stage and found blank pages, because the author had not written it yet. On Instagram, that author still counts as published.

Where AI Falls Short

AI could produce a practical guidebook with chapters, say one on replacing a car tire or taking care of a car. A book meant to pass emotion from one person to another is much harder to produce that way.

How do vanity publishers make their money?

A vanity or pay-to-publish press earns its revenue from fees charged to authors rather than from selling books to readers. Traditional publishers work the other way, paying authors an advance and earning from sales. Writers' groups such as the Authors Guild have long described charging authors upfront fees as the mark of a vanity press.

Why can AI write guidebooks more easily than novels?

Practical guides follow repeated structures, such as steps, headings, and lists of parts, and similar text fills the material models learn from. Language models generate text by predicting likely next words from those patterns. A novel depends on a consistent voice and on events set up early that pay off hundreds of pages later. An instruction manual can be read in any order.

How did self-publishing change who counts as an author?

Amazon's Kindle platform opened to self-published authors in 2007, letting anyone upload a book without a publisher's approval. That removed the gatekeeping step that once separated manuscripts from shelves. Bowker, which issues ISBNs in the United States, has reported millions of ISBNs assigned to self-published titles in a single year.
