Threads is huge in Japan
Why Japan
Japan is a text-first country, which is why haikus come from Japan. Twitter is believed to be bigger there than Facebook and Instagram, something Meta has always struggled with, so Threads found a product-market fit that the other apps never did.
Meta's CMO was hugely skeptical of Threads at first. After a recent look at the numbers with the Instagram leadership and its head of analytics, he calls it a blowout success.
Who isn't there
Plenty of people in venture circles still aren't on it. Venture capitalists, politicians, policy elites, and a highly engaged news audience tend to use Twitter, and many of them treat Twitter as if it were Facebook. Threads draws the more mainstream crowd, while VCs and tech people use Twitter.
Why do Japanese posts hold more per character?
Japanese is written partly in kanji, characters that each carry a whole meaning, so a short post can hold far more than a post of the same length in English. A 2014 white paper from Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications reported that roughly three quarters of Japanese Twitter users posted anonymously, against about a third in the United States.
How fast did Threads grow at launch?
Threads launched on July 5, 2023, and passed 100 million sign-ups in about five days. Users could sign up with an existing Instagram account, which carried over their username and let them bring over who they followed. UBS analysts estimated that ChatGPT took about two months to reach 100 million monthly users.
