Too late to tell his father
The two had never been able to understand each other. His father was plain speaking and straight talking, and when one of Dylan's teachers said his son had the nature of an artist, he asked whether an artist is a fellow who paints. Dylan had always chased after something, anything that might lead him to some unknown land downriver, and when he left home it was like Columbus setting off into the desolate Atlantic.
Now he had been to the ends of the earth and come back. In the short time at home, the older order of things came back to him, along with the realization that his father was the best man in the world and probably worth 100 of him. His father had not understood him, but they had more in common now than ever, because Dylan was a father three times over. There was a lot he wanted to share and to tell him.
How did Hibbing's mines shape the town?
Hibbing sits on Minnesota's Mesabi Range, an iron-mining region whose open-pit mines fed American steelmaking, including the huge Hull-Rust-Mahoning pit. The original townsite sat on top of ore, so the town was moved south in the 1910s and 1920s to make way for the mine. Dylan was born in Duluth in 1941, and his family moved to Hibbing when he was six.
Why did Robert Zimmerman become Bob Dylan?
Dylan began using the surname Dylan in the early 1960s, around the time he started performing in Greenwich Village. He has given varying explanations over the years, including admiration for the poet Dylan Thomas. In August 1962, he changed his name legally to Robert Dylan.
