Who attended

Attendees included Elon Musk, Jensen Huang, Mark Zuckerberg, Dario Amodei, Sundar Pichai, and Satya Nadella. OpenAI was represented by Greg, Sam Altman's partner, because Altman was launching new products. Amodei had not been invited at first, and Trump called him to say it had been an oversight and invited him to dinner two nights earlier, as reported.

The message

Trump's prepared remarks began with the sentence "Whoever wins superintelligence wins," and he repeated it. He told the companies to lead with the benefits of AI and to make a difference in the communities where they operate, pointing to Meta's teacher bonuses and hospitals as examples. Huang told the room that alarmism without solutions is unproductive and alarmism with solutions is helpful.

Inside the day

Before the session, Trump showed the group the construction of the new ballroom and East Wing, which Sacks described as seven stories, with the ballroom itself two stories up and five stories down. Trump then moderated the discussion himself, calling on people for their opinions. The six frontier model companies met separately in the Roosevelt Room.

At the press event afterward, Trump pulled Amodei forward from the back of the group to speak. Amodei, meeting David Sacks in person for the first time, greeted him with a joke: "Oh, my nemesis."

Why is it called the Roosevelt Room?

The West Wing was built in 1902 under President Theodore Roosevelt. In 1969, President Nixon renamed the room to honor both Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Before that it had been used for various purposes, including as a room that Franklin Roosevelt filled with fish trophies and aquarium decor. The room sits across the hall from the Cabinet Room and is used for meetings and briefings.

Have presidents gathered CEOs like this before?

In April 1962, President Kennedy confronted the steel industry after US Steel raised prices by six dollars a ton. He publicly criticized the increase, and his administration signaled that it could review the companies' practices. Within about three days, US Steel and the other companies that had followed it reversed the increase. The episode is one of the best-known cases of a president pressing a whole industry to change course.

Why do chip makers join AI summits?

Frontier AI models are trained on clusters of thousands of specialized chips, so the supply of those chips limits how fast a lab can grow. Nvidia designs most of the chips used for that work. Taiwan's TSMC has manufactured the most advanced of them for companies such as Nvidia. Memory chips and data center power are separate constraints, which is why those industries are often represented too.
