The strike came after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told the Financial Times that Kyiv is done supporting the energy ceasefire announced by President Trump. The Ryazan refinery supplies Moscow.

On Thursday, Zelenskyy met European leaders on the sidelines of an EU meeting in Brussels. He stressed the need for continued NATO military supplies, including ballistic missile interceptors and ammunition for F16 fighter jets.

Why do drones target oil refineries?

A refinery packs its most important equipment into a small area: distillation towers, heaters, and pipe networks. Damage to one key unit can halt the whole plant. Rebuilding is slow because the large specialized components often have long manufacturing lead times. A strike therefore cuts fuel output for far longer than the fire itself lasts.

Why are ballistic missile interceptors so scarce?

Ballistic missiles climb high and then fall at several times the speed of sound, which leaves air defenses only moments to react. Only a few systems in the world can intercept them, and each interceptor is a costly missile that takes a long time to build. Production lines turn out only a limited number each year. A single defensive battery can run through its stock of interceptors in one night of heavy attacks.

Why does Ryazan matter for supplying Moscow?

Ryazan sits roughly 180 kilometers southeast of Moscow. Russian refineries are linked to the capital region by pipelines and rail lines, which carry fuel from plants in the central part of the country. Refined products from a plant that close can reach the capital by rail within a day. That proximity makes Ryazan one of the refineries that feeds the Moscow region.
