Zelensky spoke after talks in Oslo with Steve Witkoff, President Trump's envoy. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had dismissed Kyiv's accusation as scandalous. Zelensky thanked the American side and said the warnings matter most for civilians, including children. He also said an agreement will bring Starshield, the military version of Starlink, back to full speed within a couple of days, after a week of speed restrictions that limited Ukraine's ability to coordinate its drones.

Zelensky also raised the Patriot interceptors Ukraine uses to shoot down Russian missiles, and no promises were made. Washington described the Oslo talks as very productive and constructive. At the White House, Trump said Zelensky has to want to settle the war and that American taxpayers are tired of paying for it.

Witkoff is now traveling to Saint Petersburg to share the latest peace proposals with President Putin. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the Kremlin would listen but ruled out any political concessions. Norway's prime minister, who hosted the Oslo talks, hopes the Saint Petersburg talks will lead to a three-way meeting of the Russian, Ukrainian, and US leaders. The Oslo discussions covered security, a post-war prosperity plan for Ukraine, territory, sanctions, and the European security order.

How does missile early warning work?

Satellites carrying infrared sensors can spot the intense heat plume of a missile launch within seconds. Ground-based radars then track the missile's path and estimate where it will land. That data is passed to air defense units and civil alert systems, which can give cities a few minutes to take cover. Early-warning satellites in high orbits were first fielded by the United States in the 1970s.

Why does satellite internet matter for drones?

Starlink satellites orbit at roughly 550 kilometers, far lower than traditional geostationary satellites at about 35,786 kilometers. The shorter distance cuts the delay in each signal to a small fraction of a second. That low delay is what lets an operator steer a drone and watch its video feed in near real time. Starshield is the government-oriented line that SpaceX built on the Starlink network.

What makes Patriot interceptors hard to replace?

Each Patriot interceptor is a precision guided missile with its own radar seeker, built by specialist contractors in limited production runs. The newer PAC-3 interceptors cost millions of dollars apiece. Patriot was designed to defend against aircraft and ballistic missiles, which is why demand is high wherever ballistic threats exist. Only a small number of countries and factories can produce them.

Why does Norway host so many peace talks?

Norway has built a long record as a mediator. Secret talks in Oslo between Israeli and Palestinian negotiators produced the Oslo Accords in 1993. The country is not a member of the European Union, which helps it present itself as neutral. The Nobel Peace Prize is also awarded in Oslo each year.
