We'll be busier than we want
AI as a genie
AI is about to become something like a genie that can grant any wish. The first wishes the world asks of it should benefit the world as a whole, and people should understand just how creative they can be with them.
Work that won't run out
People will have such creative wishes and such incredible ideas for what to ask AI to help build that the work will not run out. Curing diseases is the obvious benefit, and the world's best entertainment ideas are the kind of thing nobody can even dream of sitting here now.
What it is for
All of it matters only if it makes people's lives much better than they otherwise would have been. That means material abundance, access to do whatever they want, and room to express their creativity and their desire to help each other.
Why does technology keep creating new jobs?
Economist David Autor and coauthors found in a 2022 study that more than 60 percent of US employment in 2018 was in job titles that did not exist in 1940. Their analysis traced much of the new work to the technologies and demands of each era, such as computing and services built around it. Occupations such as software developer and web designer had no equivalent a few decades earlier.
Why did Keynes predict such short work weeks?
In his 1930 essay Economic Possibilities for our Grandchildren, John Maynard Keynes predicted that rising productivity would shrink the work week to about fifteen hours by 2030. Productivity did grow enormously, but wants grew with it. By Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development data, average annual working hours in rich countries have fallen well below their level a century ago, yet remain far above fifteen hours a week.
