Our ancestors farmed in one season, harvested in another, and then ate and slept and did nothing in a third. Replit follows a version of that: two or three releases a year, each with three or four weeks of intensity. A lot of the rest of the time there is no strict deadline for everyone to drive toward, and that period is where much of the invention happens.

Every week brings a new invention. Recently an engineer messaged a demo of a Git hosting service he had built, since GitHub is down a lot these days, and the number of agents committing to it is kind of insane. It could become a product, though probably won't. Some inventions get productized, and others become internal tools that replace a contract the company was paying for.

What makes it work is freedom. People get enough room to build, in a culture where building things is fun and where it's not intense all the time.

Why did the farming calendar shape how people worked?

Farm work follows weather and crop cycles, so effort comes in bursts: long days at planting and harvest, lighter stretches between. The historian E. P. Thompson described this in his 1967 essay Time, Work-Discipline, and Industrial Capitalism, calling it task-oriented time. He contrasted it with the clock-measured hours that factories introduced. In that essay, the factory clock is what pushed workers toward steady, uniform days.

How does unscheduled time lead to inventions?

3M has allowed technical staff to spend part of their time on projects of their own choosing since a policy William McKnight set in 1948. Art Fry, a 3M researcher, used such time in the 1970s to develop a bookmark that would stay put in his hymnal, built on a weak adhesive another 3M chemist, Spencer Silver, had made earlier. That work became the Post-it Note. The product reached the national market in the United States in 1980.

How does Git work without one central server?

Git is a distributed version control system that Linus Torvalds created in 2005 to manage Linux kernel development. Every copy of a repository holds the project's complete history, so any copy can be used to restore the others. Hosting services such as GitHub, which launched in 2008, add web pages, access controls, and review tools around this core. A team can therefore run its own Git host and still use the same commands.
