Write down your own principles
John D. Rockefeller Jr.'s principles are etched in stone outside Rockefeller Center, about ten of them, including the sacredness of a promise and the belief that a person's word should be as good as their bond. They are the kind of clear statements that bring people to a higher level of how to be.
Most people don't know what their own principles are. Fewer write them down, and fewer still act in alignment with them. Getting there means writing them down, looking at them, and having the daylights kicked out of them until the clear ones remain.
The principles in Dalio's book are his own, not a set meant for everybody. The point is that each person should work out theirs. When Bridgewater posted its principles online for free, they were downloaded about 3 million times.
What is carved at Rockefeller Center?
A credo by John D. Rockefeller Jr. is etched in stone at Rockefeller Center in New York City. It begins with a statement of belief in the supreme worth of the individual. The text is a rare example of a public building displaying a personal statement of principles.
Why does writing down an intention help?
Psychologist Peter Gollwitzer studied implementation intentions, which are specific plans in the form 'if this situation arises, I will do that.' A 2006 meta-analysis by Gollwitzer and Paschal Sheeran, covering nearly a hundred studies, found that people who made such plans were substantially more likely to follow through on their goals. Writing a commitment down makes it concrete enough to check against later behavior.
Why do ideas improve when challenged?
Cognitive scientists Hugo Mercier and Dan Sperber argued that human reasoning evolved mainly for debate and persuasion. In their account, individuals reasoning alone tend to find support for what they already think, while a group arguing over a claim tends to arrive at better answers. Experiments on group problem-solving have found that groups often beat their best individual member.
