YouTube ads fed Google search
Why Google led
Google Ads was the main driver at Wispr Flow, and everything printed there: non-branded search, PMAX, YouTube ads. It spans the whole funnel in one platform, and the product is freemium, so campaigns could optimize for app downloads.
Educating with video
The product is hard to explain. Speaking turns into text, but where, and voice notes mean nothing to someone who has never sent one on WhatsApp. So 30-second to one-minute YouTube videos educated the audience. They ran for a while, reaching hundreds of millions of impressions.
How impressions convert
Those impressions fed non-branded search, PMAX, other placements, and display, and eventually those people converted. A channel improves over time, though it starts poorly because conversions take a while to arrive. Each has its own scaling law, and at some point the unlock comes from diversifying into other platforms.
How does Performance Max place ads?
Google announced Performance Max in 2020 and made it generally available in 2021. One campaign serves ads across Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail, and Maps. Advertisers supply assets such as headlines, images, and videos, and Google's system assembles and places the combinations. The advertiser sets a goal, such as app downloads or sales, and the system optimizes toward it.
How do views lead to later conversions?
Google Ads reports view-through conversions, which count a conversion when someone saw an ad, did not click, and converted later. The default window is one day. Awareness videos tend to show their effect this way, in searches that happen afterward. Marketers study the effect by comparing groups that saw the ads with groups that did not.
Why did voice dictation take so long to catch on?
Dragon NaturallySpeaking, released in 1997, is widely described as the first continuous dictation software for general consumers. Before it, users had to pause between words. Apple's Siri arrived in 2011 and put speech recognition on phones.
