A $2 billion startup's typo says more than its valuation does
The way Mercor's founder explains 72-hour weeks and a $100 million raise reveals obsession, an early-stage investor argues.

mondaymorning.substack.com · Venture PsychologyHarry Stebbings, a podcast host who talks to startup founders, asked Mercor's founder about the company's 9-9-6 schedule, shorthand for 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., six days a week. According to an early stage investor who wrote about the exchange, the founder replied that the team was so eager to keep working that the company set limits to make sure people rested on Sunday.
The investor says readers should pay less attention to the long hours than to that explanation. In his view, the framing tells you how the founder thinks, and therefore how the company will be run. His rule, in his words: "how a founder makes any decision is how a founder makes every decision."
He sees the same outlook in how Mercor announced its funding. After raising $100 million at a $2 billion valuation, the startup put up a website banner that read, "Mercor rasies $100m to find your next job," misspelling included. He argues most startups would have used that space to highlight themselves.
As an example of what Mercor could have highlighted instead, he points to what he describes as topping $70 million in recurring revenue in two years. Instead, he writes, the banner spoke to job seekers, not to the press or to other investors. He imagines, as illustration rather than reported fact, a person writing the banner deciding that it should be about customers, not about the company.
He takes that small choice as evidence of a company centered on its customers, the kind of focus he believes tends to endure over time.
Questions people ask
What does Mercor actually do?
Mercor is an AI recruiting marketplace that interviews software engineers and other job seekers with AI, then matches them with employers. Companies use it to hire faster without screening every resume themselves, and candidates use it to find jobs. It was founded in 2023 by three college friends.
What is 9-9-6, and where does it come from?
It means working 9am to 9pm, six days a week, or about 72 hours. A similar schedule, known as 996, became famous and controversial among Chinese tech companies in the 2010s. Supporters describe it as dedication, while critics describe it as burnout.
What is ARR?
ARR stands for annual recurring revenue, the amount of subscription revenue a company would collect in a year if current contracts continued. Investors watch it because it shows growth in a single repeatable number. For Mercor, more than $70 million in two years would be unusually fast.
