A Slower Satellite Signal Makes Ukraine's Drones Much Harder to Fly

Ukraine mounts the dishes on strike drones and drone hunters, so a slower connection makes both far harder to use.

Ukraine’s most far-reaching drones fly with a small satellite dish riding on top.

That dish is a terminal for Starlink, the satellite internet network built by Elon Musk’s company SpaceX. It links the drone to satellites overhead, and through them to operators and guidance far from the front line. Ukraine says SpaceX has purposefully restricted that link for its military, and Musk says Washington controls those limits on the military version, with Trump having the final say.

The restriction does not have to be a shutdown. According to Dan Flynn, the Reuters Ukraine bureau chief, “Limiting the speed of the Starlink terminal makes it extremely hard for Ukraine to use this in combat missions.”

Speed matters because these are moving weapons, not stationary users checking email. Ukraine has been putting the terminals on mid-range strike drones sent deep behind Russian positions to hit military targets that supply weapons and logistical support to the front.

Officials say it also puts them on interceptor drones. Those are the fast defensive drones Ukraine sends up to knock down Russian Shahed attack drones. Russia has been sending those attack drones in large numbers against cities such as Kyiv almost around the clock in recent months.

Slow that connection, and both jobs get harder because the drones need a steady link to stay guided while moving. The link to a strike drone may not hold on its long flight into the Russian rear. The interceptor faces the same problem during the quick, precise chase needed to catch another fast-moving drone in the sky.

The effect arrived at a harsh moment. Kyiv says the restriction came just as a large barrage of missiles struck power stations and left 600,000 people without electricity. At the same time, Trump is pressuring Ukraine to stop striking Russian oil refineries while he seeks a diesel purchase from Moscow meant to lower fuel prices.

Questions people ask

What exactly is Starlink?

Starlink is a network of thousands of small satellites in low orbit that beam internet down to small dish antennas called terminals. A user sets up the dish with a view of the sky, and it connects to passing satellites for phone-quality to broadband-quality service, even where cell towers and cables are destroyed.

What is a Shahed drone?

A Shahed is a one-way attack drone, originally designed in Iran and now used heavily by Russia, with a propeller or small jet engine and an explosive warhead. Russia launches them in large waves at cities and power plants, and Ukraine tries to shoot them down with missiles, guns, and interceptor drones.

Why does a slightly slower connection matter so much to a drone?

A drone far from its operator needs a continuous, fast link to receive course corrections and send back its position. If the data rate drops or the delay grows, commands arrive late and the link can break off entirely, which matters most when both the hunter and the target are moving at hundreds of miles per hour.
