A Venezuelan Guard Says the Maduro Raid Was a Warning to Latin America

His unverified description of an American mystery weapon was shared online by a senior White House spokeswoman, who did not say whether it had been confirmed.

The warning came from an anonymous Venezuelan guard loyal to Maduro, in a witness description that Karoline Leavitt, who speaks for the White House, put on X on Saturday. The guard said his radar systems shut down, drones flew over his positions, and barely eight helicopters delivered about 20 American troops with technology unlike anything he had seen.

Then, he offered his lesson from it. “I’m sending a warning to anyone who thinks they can fight the United States,” he said. “They have no idea what they’re capable of.”

What taught him that, he said, was helplessness. He claimed the Americans fired with astonishing precision, and then unleashed something he described as a very intense sound wave that made his head feel as if it were exploding from the inside. He said men bled from the nose and some vomited blood. “We fell to the ground, unable to move,” the guard said, adding that 20 men killed hundreds without suffering a casualty.

He argued the point of that display was deterrence. He said the message was “Don’t tread on Uncle Sam.” He said the raid has “sent shockwaves across Latin America,” especially after the American president warned that Mexico is now “on the list.” “Everyone is already talking about this,” he said. “No one wants to go through what we went through.”

The account reached a wider audience when Leavitt posted it with the caption, “Stop what you are doing and read this...” The White House did not answer whether sharing the account meant the administration was verifying it. For context on whether his claim is plausible, a former American intelligence source said American forces have possessed such focused-energy arms for decades, and that they can produce some of the reported effects, including bleeding, inability to move, pain and burning, but not all of them.

He closed with his own prediction. “What happened here is going to change a lot of things, not just in Venezuela, but throughout the region.”

Questions people ask

Are sonic or directed energy weapons real?

Directed energy weapons are real military research programs that use focused microwaves, lasers, or sound to disable people or equipment. The United States, China, and other countries have tested them for decades, mostly for crowd control, missile defense, and disabling electronics. No government has confirmed that such a weapon was used in the Maduro raid.

How many people died in the raid?

Venezuelan officials said about 100 of their security forces were killed in the Jan. 3 operation. The guard claimed that 20 Americans killed hundreds without a casualty, a much higher toll. It remains unclear whether any deaths were caused by the alleged mystery weapon.

Why would the White House share an account it has not verified?

The White House has not explained why it shared the post. It did not answer a question about whether sharing the account meant it was verifying the story. Readers therefore cannot tell from the post alone whether officials believe the guard's claims.
