Cleared by Police Does Not Mean Cleared at Home

Men ruled out by investigators say people keep whispering, especially in small towns where everyone knows your name.

Andrea Canning, a correspondent who covered the disappearance of Tara, a Georgia teacher, was discussing Tara's dating history with fellow correspondent Blayne Alexander when the talk turned to the cost of being a suspect.

Canning summed up what she learned this way: "once they're excluded from the suspect list, life doesn't just instantly go back to normal."

Tara was unmarried and dating, which Canning viewed as ordinary. Under investigation, though, each relationship invited a fresh round of suspicion.

One example was Marcus Harper, Tara's ex-boyfriend, who police looked at closely. After several men drew attention, Harper remained an investigative focus for an extended period before investigators ruled him out.

Gary Rothwell, the state investigator on the case, captured that tunnel vision. With each new man, Canning recalled him saying, "oh, this has to be the one."

Meeting Harper for an interview, Canning sensed the residue. She described long scrutiny, whispers and stares from people wondering whether he had done it, and the difficulty of shaking that feeling even after clearance.

Alexander pointed to the same pattern in another Georgia killing she covered, involving a young woman named Tara Baker. There, suspicion damaged the ex-boyfriend's livelihood, with people harming his business and leaving lasting financial strain.

Both correspondents stressed the role of place. In a small town, where familiar faces show up everywhere, that lingering doubt feels heavier and harder to escape.

Canning said her interviews keep ending in the same place. Many men once viewed as boyfriends or suspects tell her that some people still believe they did it.

Questions people ask

Who was Tara?

Tara Grinstead was a high school teacher and former beauty pageant contestant from Ocilla, Georgia, who disappeared from her home in 2005. Her body has never been found, and no one has been convicted of killing her.

Was Marcus Harper ever charged?

Harper was Tara Grinstead's ex-boyfriend and an early focus of the investigation. Investigators eventually ruled him out, and Canning says he had nothing to do with her disappearance.

Why is small town suspicion so hard to shake?

People see each other at stores, church, school games, and work, so a rumor can follow someone for years. Researchers call this stigma stickiness, and it is stronger where social networks overlap and newcomers rarely arrive to reset reputations.
