Cursor Won a Star Hire With a Personal Gift

The couple-hundred-dollar gift was part of daily standups, a dedicated Slack channel, and a closing process built to make one person feel chosen.

The dinner in New York was about the job offer. Then the Cursor team presented a second surprise.

It was a Turkish guitar that played almost like a violin. The team had found it at a shop in New York that sells unusual instruments, and brought it to the dinner where they made the offer.

The candidate was a classically trained violinist who had attended an arts high school and was, in Adam Ward's words, "very into" stringed instruments. Ward, Head of Talent at Cursor, said the team had learned that detail through getting to know the candidate.

That personal close is how Cursor tries to win the people it wants most. Ward says closing is a team sport, not a final sales pitch. For a high profile candidate, the hiring manager, recruiter, and others hold a daily standup, sometimes just 10 minutes, to coordinate what they are doing collectively to get that person to yes.

Ward said closing happens throughout the process, through who the candidate meets, understanding motivations and removing objections along the way. Each candidate gets a dedicated Slack channel where the team shares strategy and updates.

The goal, Ward said, is to make the person feel cared for, and to show belonging and a process tailored to them. When candidates describe the best experience, he said, they often say it felt tailored to them and unique to them.

It cost a couple hundred dollars, maybe, Ward said. That was small next to the offer and the impact the hire was expected to have. What stood out, Ward said, was "the thoughtfulness and the touching uniqueness of it and the personal moment".

At a time when top artificial intelligence talent can draw huge offers, Cursor is betting on careful attention to one person. Ward said sharing stories like this one builds a culture of recruiting inside the company.

Questions people ask

What does Cursor actually do?

Cursor makes an artificial intelligence coding assistant that writes, edits, and explains software code inside a programmer's editor. It started with tab autocomplete and later moved to cloud based agents that can handle larger coding tasks.

What is a Turkish guitar-violin?

Turkey has several short necked lutes and bowed fiddles, and some modern builders blend guitar and violin features into unusual hybrids. A shop that specializes in world instruments in New York would carry one of a kind imports you will not find in a typical music store.

Why would a small gift matter next to a huge salary?

In a hot market for AI engineers, money quickly becomes the baseline and competing offers can look similar. Personal attention signals that the team noticed who you are, which helps a candidate imagine what it will feel like to work there.
