Forget the Big Leap. Reinvent Your Life 30 Minutes at a Time.

Nine hundred minutes of small actions can narrow the gap between what you know about your current life and what you know about the next one.

Sahil Bloom says a new life comes from action, not just thought. The problem is that if you make the starting goal too demanding, you will never act at all. His fix is deliberately unheroic: 30 minutes a day for 30 straight days spent on small steps toward the new life.

The method starts before the timer does. On a blank sheet of paper, write down specific actions that would give you information about the future life you want, and evidence that you can live it. Bloom's examples include having ten informal chats with workers doing what interests you, going to an industry event in person or online, contacting ten possible buyers about a new business idea, building a landing page for a new service, or identifying one ideal customer and doing advance work that fixes a pain point for that person.

Those steps matter because they are entirely within your control and cost nothing but your time. They expand what you know about the next life and what proof you have that you can live it. The gap between what you know about your current life and what you know about the next one is what makes the change feel scary.

Then lower what Bloom calls the activation energy, the effort it takes to start. Reserve a half hour in your schedule each day for the coming month to work on one of those actions. No single day will feel heroic, and that is intentional.

"Heroic plans are just premeditated failures," Bloom says. Thirty minutes a day for 30 days is 900 minutes of focused effort, enough to add up to real change with no single overwhelming effort required. The first step is to write the list, then choose one item for tomorrow's half hour.

Questions people ask

When during the day should I do the 30 minutes?

Bloom does not name a time in this method. As a practical matter, pick the same protected slot every day, with notifications off, so it runs on routine rather than motivation.

What should I do if I miss a day?

Just restart the next day and keep going. The value is in accumulated time, so what matters most is returning to the routine the day after a miss.

Which action should I start with?

Bloom lists several examples without ranking them. Learning chats are a low pressure way to gather information about what the work is really like. A landing page or client outreach are other ways he names to test whether you can do it.
