If the Waffle House Is Closed, the Hurricane Is Serious
The 24-hour chain is famous for riding out storms, so its locked doors told residents how serious Isaias was.

That was the signal from the Florida Panhandle as Hurricane Isaias came ashore. Debbie Elliott, a national correspondent reporting from Crestview, Florida, said she was about 30 miles inland near Interstate 10 when rain and wind gusts picked up late in the afternoon and most businesses around her "were long closed by then, including the Waffle House," which "is famous for staying open in all kinds of circumstances."
That closure showed how severe the storm was. By nightfall, pine trees outside her hotel swayed and hit the building, and heavy rain beat against the window. Elliott said the National Hurricane Center reported 105-mile-an-hour winds at landfall, which she said was "enough to snap trees and power lines, knock down street signs, and rip awnings from buildings."
Elliott reported Saturday morning that more than 800,000 customers had no electricity, with Florida and Alabama hit hardest and some outages in Georgia.
Questions people ask
What is Waffle House?
Waffle House is a Southern-based chain of around 2,000 small, 24-hour diners known for hash browns, waffles, and breakfast served all day. The restaurants are famously inexpensive, brightly lit, and staffed around the clock. For travelers on interstate highways, they are a familiar landmark that almost never closes.
Do emergency managers really watch Waffle House?
Yes. The rough gauge is often called the Waffle House Index, a term associated with former Federal Emergency Management Agency administrator Craig Fugate. Green means the restaurant is open with a full menu, yellow means open with a limited menu, and red means closed, which suggests severe damage and difficult recovery. It is informal, but officials like it because the chain tracks conditions block by block.
Why does Waffle House stay open in hurricanes?
The company has extensive storm planning, including portable generators, pre-positioned food, and teams that can travel into damaged areas. Staying open lets it serve first responders, utility crews, and residents when other restaurants are dark. That preparation is why a closure stands out, since it usually means power is out, roads are impassable, or the building itself is unsafe.
