Jensen Huang told her no lasting company is generic
Lin Qiao says the exchange gave her words for why she argues for specialized models.

20VC with Harry Stebbings · The Open-Source AI Reality | How Token Costs Will Fall 10X & Usage Will Explode 100X | Lin QiaoAfter his keynote at GTC, Nvidia's technology conference, Jensen Huang started talking with Lin Qiao. She thought they were just chatting. She did not realize his crew had already started recording, and they just kept talking.
Qiao runs Fireworks AI, which helps companies tune AI models on their own private data. Most of the world's data is locked inside businesses and is not used to train general models, so she argues the next frontier is specialized intelligence built for one company's work rather than one model that tries to do everything.
Huang told her she was right. As Qiao recalled it, he said there is no generic lasting company, because "every company is built on a special belief" about how something should be done, and otherwise there would be no reason for it to exist.
At the time, that felt logical to her. Later, she said, she started to think back on what he said because it seemed profound.
In her telling, "every single company is doing something unique that justify their existence."
That difference, she said, is "deeply baked into" product design, software design, and how systems are built. It is also in the data a company holds and what it learns from how users interact with its product and what they intend.
That base of knowledge, she said, is not learnable by another company sitting outside. She said it comes from a firm's own product, its own engagement, and what it learns about user intent.
She keeps thinking about the exchange because it gave words to her own belief about creativity. If the future were ruled by one standard of taste from one company, she said, "we turn ourself into an army of robots." What makes a company worth keeping, in her view, is the specific understanding on which it was built.
Questions people ask
What is GTC?
GTC is Nvidia's large annual technology conference, originally focused on graphics chips and now centered on artificial intelligence. Engineers, startups, and executives attend to hear about new chips and AI systems. Huang's keynote often sets the tone for the industry.
What does Fireworks AI do?
Fireworks AI provides software and computing systems that help businesses run and customize AI models. Instead of offering one general model, it helps a company adapt a model with its own data. The aim is AI that is faster, cheaper, and better fitted to a specific job.
What is specialized intelligence?
She means AI shaped for one company's tasks, customers, and rules, using its private data and feedback. A general model tries to answer anything, while a specialized model learns a particular business. Her argument is that this specific knowledge is what makes the AI useful and hard to copy.
