Machines Learn in Three Different Ways

One method studies questions with answers included, one sorts unmarked material into groups, and one improves through feedback on its tries.

Computers do not always need step-by-step orders. In machine learning, a computer studies earlier cases and then uses what it found to handle new ones, without a person writing a rule for every choice.

It starts by gathering earlier examples to study, so it can build a working model for later guesses. The more examples it has seen, the more often its answers turn out right.

The first way uses teaching examples that show both the question and the right answer, so the computer learns what result to expect from similar material.

The second way uses examples with no answers marked, so the computer must sort through them alone and notice which ones belong together.

The third way works through practice and feedback on how well it did, keeping actions that succeed and dropping those that fail.

Because of those three paths, a trained computer can face material it has never seen and still offer a reasoned guess.

Questions people ask

What does labeled data actually look like?

Labeled data is material where someone has already noted the correct result. A pile of customer messages might already be sorted into complaints and compliments, so the computer can study what each kind looks like.

How is machine learning different from normal computer programming?

In ordinary programming, a person writes a rule for each decision. In machine learning, a person provides examples, and the system forms its own working model from those examples and then applies it to new cases.

Does more data always make a model better?

More data usually helps, but only if the examples are relevant and reflect the kind of cases the system will later face. A very large pile of off-topic or one-sided examples can still leave the model unprepared.
